Commissioner's Road Safety Budget
Road safety is one of the biggest concerns raised with the Commissioner by residents. More people die each year on Hertfordshire’s roads than by homicide, with many more being injured and the Commissioner is working with Roads Policing to address this.
Concerns around anti-social driving are also often raised. The Commissioner identified that a greater emphasis on improving road safety requires a partnership effort. The Constabulary and Commissioner’s Office both have roles to play alongside the county council, as the highway authority.
The Commissioner has a Road Safety Budget (RSB) which can be used to educate road users, prevent incidents on the road, support victims of incidents on the road, and provide interventions to address community concern around various aspects of illegal/antisocial behaviours on the road. Hertfordshire is currently benefiting from over 50 RSB-funded speed indicator devices, automated DriveSafe speed monitoring devices, educational speed vans and a pilot acoustic monitoring project.
The Commissioner wants to give more local communities affected by illegal/antisocial behaviour on Hertfordshire roads the chance to benefit from a possible RSB-funded intervention to reduce the impact on residents and communities.

Following an assessment by my team, the applicant may be invited to submit a full application for RSB funding towards a possible solution/intervention. Please see this document for guidance.
Please be aware that any proposed intervention may have to adhere to the requirements of the Hertfordshire Speed Management Strategy. An example of this is minimum speed survey thresholds that need to be met for installation of a speed indicator device or automated DriveSafe device.
The Hertfordshire Road Safety Partnership scrutinise any proposals on behalf of the Commissioner.
The Commissioner is also keen to deliver solutions that are sustainable and, whilst the RSB would pay one-off costs for an intervention, the respective Parish/Town or District Council would be expected to pay ongoing costs.
