Progress on Crime Recording Welcomed by Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner

Hertfordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Jonathan Ash-Edwards, has welcomed the recent announcement from HMICFRS recognising significant improvements in how Hertfordshire Constabulary records crime, with a previous cause of concern now formally lifted.

Last year, His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) raised a formal cause of concern about crime recording practices in Hertfordshire. Since then, the Constabulary has undertaken extensive work to address these issues, particularly in the recording of violent crime, antisocial behaviour and crimes of rape. A follow-up inspection by HMICFRS in April found clear signs of progress and confirmed that the cause of concern has now been closed.

PCC Jonathan Ash-Edwards said, “This is an important milestone and recognition of the significant work that has taken place to improve crime recording in Hertfordshire.

While this was never about meeting an inspection grade, it is about something far more important; making sure that victims get the right support, that more offenders are brought to justice, and that the public can have confidence that their reports are taken seriously.

It also means we are using the best data possible to make the case for more police resources for our communities. I want to thank everyone involved for their efforts, particularly those in the new Crime Hub, and encourage continued focus to build on this progress.”

Chief Constable Andy Prophet said, “The inspectors closing the cause for concern is good news for Hertfordshire.  It is the result of an enormous team effort by all officers and staff involved in the improvements.  I am determined that we will maintain our focus and improve further in the coming months.”
